Optimization has been playing a key role in the design, planning and operation of chemical and related processes, for nearly half a century. Although process optimization for multiple objectives was studied by several researchers in the 70’s and 80’s, it has attracted active research in the last 10 years spurred by the new and effective techniques for multi-objective optimization. In order to capture this renewed interest, this monograph presents the recent and on-going research in multi-objective optimization techniques and its applications to chemical engineering.
The book is the first volume in the series “Advances in Process Systems Engineering” published by World Scientific. The chapters for this volume have been contributed by leading researchers working in multi-objective optimization and its applications. A CD-ROM accompanying the book contains computer codes, applications and exercises described in the different chapters. The book hopes to stimulate further research in multi-objective optimization and its industrial applications and is therefore a good resource material for use as a supplementary text in optimization courses.
Following the introduction and a review chapter on multi-objectiveoptimization applications in chemical engineering since the year 2000, the book has several chapters describing the selected multi-objective optimization techniques in Part A and then many chapters on chemical engineering applications in Part B. These applications are from diverse areas within chemical engineering, and are presented in detail. While all the chapters will be of interest to researchers in multi-objective optimization and/or chemical engineering, the chapters can also be read individually. Several exercises are included at the end of many chapters, for use by both practicing engineers and students.
